Could You Be a Good Neighbour? Volunteers Needed for Befriending

Do you have a little time to spare and a big heart for helping others? We’re looking for volunteers to join our Good Neighbour Befriending Scheme, which pairs local people with residents who would benefit from companionship, conversation, and a friendly face.

Loneliness and social isolation are real challenges in our community, especially for those who live alone or have limited mobility. A simple weekly visit, a regular phone call, or a chat over a cup of tea can have a lasting impact – turning an ordinary day into something to look forward to.

“Befriending doesn’t require special skills, just kindness, reliability, and a willingness to listen. In return, volunteers tell us they find the experience deeply rewarding, building friendships, gaining insight into other people’s lives, and knowing they’re making a tangible difference.”  Kim Kimbell, Ageing Well Coordinator

Deborah’s story

Hilary, a volunteer befriender, was introduced to Deborah to offer companionship and support during a difficult time. Deborah, a 77 year old woman, had spent months confined to her home, experiencing profound loneliness and isolation. She shared with Hilary that she rarely saw anyone and felt disconnected from the world around her.

“From our very first meeting, Hilary’s warmth and cheerful nature made me feel comfortable and at ease. We quickly discovered we had shared interests and even mutual friends, which sparked some lovely conversations and a sense of familiarity. Hilary’s visits became a regular highlight of my week; it was so nice to have someone to talk to and share stories with, easing the loneliness I had been feeling.”

If you’d like to get involved, we’ll give you all the support and training you need.  An hour a week is all we ask and your time could be life-changing for someone else.
